Abstract
Recent legislation in Illinois schools has focused on enhancing cardiac preparation in schools by establishing written emergency plans that are to be disseminated to employees within thirty days from the start of the school year. This web-based education tool was created as a centralized hub for employees to locate pertinent information regarding cardiac emergencies. The intent is to increase cardiac emergency preparedness in schools with access to evidence-based resources and content. The project began by performing a literature review to collect data on cardiac emergencies within the school, leading to the development of the web-based educational portal. The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and the School Nursing Practice Framework served as guides in the creation of the types of content included in the web-based portal. The study explored the knowledge base before and after the implementation of the web-based educational portal to school personnel at Lockport Township High School 205 through a quasi-experimental research approach. Ten employees were in attendance at the in-person presentation of the Cardiac Emergency Preparedness web-based portal. A mix of Likert-scale survey questions and multiple choice content questions constituted the pre-test and post-test that was administered utilizing the Google Forms Survey. Likert-scale responses demonstrated improved for all participants after the in-person presentation navigating them through the web-based portal. All participants were able to correctly answer the multiple choice questions after navigating the web-based portal. Through the creation of this web-based educational portal, school nurses will be able to reach all school personnel to enhance knowledge and preparedness during cardiac emergencies.
