Abstract
Background: The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) identifies the teaching of health promotion, health literacy, and disease prevention as one of the practice principles of school nurses (NASN, 2024). The aim of this project was to examine how health education topics and curriculum in school districts is determined, who is teaching the curriculum, and if there is a role for the school nurse in the development, collaboration or teaching of the curriculum.
Purpose: The project investigated if school nurses are involved in the selection and/or teaching of the curriculum chosen by the district. Input from school nurses and physical education teachers was solicited through use of an email invitation to complete an anonymous Google Survey identifying their professional experience and knowledge relating to their school’s health education curriculum. A mixed analysis utilizing quantitative and descriptive statistics was performed on the results of the survey. The survey results revealed that many of the school nurse respondents are not sure if their school district has a health education curriculum committee. Additionally, they have no knowledge of the health curriculum development process, and are not involved in teaching health education. PE teachers are the primary providers of health education in the majority of participants' schools. Each participant had the opportunity to provide their subjective opinion on their capacity to bring professional value to the topic of health education curriculum and material being taught.
